Storytime Activity: 6 Creepy Closets

Well here is ONE creepy door.

I don’t have a printout or examples for this counting activity. This rhyme was made an hour before the storytime, and I didn’t have time to make anything fancy. So I fired up [insert your preferred search engine], did an image search, and printed out six doors. Then I did an image search for the thing which go behind the doors and printed each out on the opposite sides of the door pages. Simple! Not as classy as a handcrafted flannel but great if you need a fun activity in a pinch.

6 Creepy Closets are hiding their secrets

One started glowing and behind it was a…flashlight!

5 Creepy Closets are hiding their secrets

One started leaking and behind it was a….mop!

4 Creepy Closets are hiding their secrets

One began to shake and behind it was a…. washing machine!

3 Creepy Closets are hiding their secrets

One started shrieking and behind it was a….vacuum!

2 Creepy Closets are hiding their secrets

One started growling and behind it was a….dog!

1 Creepy Closet is hiding its secret

It began to giggle and behind it was a….monster!

It was playing hide-and-seek and you won!

This activity would work great with my Monster Closet craft. Almost like I meant for that ha ha! It’s funny because I used the same joke on the Monster Door post. Oh wait. That makes it less funny.

Need monster books? I have a ton of those. Got a bunch of scary books too.

5 Flower Pots

There might be a video to post with this later? A video was taken at some point in time. And may or may not have been saved somewhere. Maybe.

Perhaps this would be better for spring weather? Maybe it’s wishful thinking now that I live in a winter wonder wasteland.

The rhyme is pretty basic but putting it into practice is a little more complex. For myself, I got flower pots, drew some flowers, attached said flowers to green pipe cleaners, added some grass around the rim of the pots and BAM! A flower that I could push up and make “grow”.

I’m sure there’s easier/better methods but I wanted to try something new. You could get the same effect with popsicle sticks and paper, or even just double sided flannel pieces that you flip.

Five Flower Pots In The Winter Brand New.

The First Flower Grew And It Was…Blue!

Four Flower Pots Warming In The Spring

The Second Flower Grew And It Was…Green!

Three Flower Pots In The Summer Feeling Mellow

The Third Flower Grew And It Was…Yellow!

Two Flower Pots Waiting As The Fall Leaves Fled

The Fourth Flower Grew And it Was…Red!

One Flower Pot Left, Do You Think We Can Share It?

Out From The Soil Pops One Big….RABBIT?!

GET IT? BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE “CARROT”. Well maybe that didn’t come across in the script but I made sure to have a bit of the carrot showing above the pot. Those kids thought they were so clever guessing ahead. STUPID KIDS HAHA.

Want some wabbit, er I mean rabbit books for your storytime? Check out my rabbit books on Shelfari. Or maybe you’ll use this with a color themed storytime?

Pro tip! You can further narrow down the search by going down to the tag cloud below the books and find the “storytime” tag. Click on that while rabbits are selected to see all the storytimes I’ve done with rabbits!

UPDATE: Rabbit PDF. Click link below.

Five Little Clouds

Nothing fancy, just some clouds getting together and having a party.

5 Little Clouds

One little cloud is sitting all sad and alone

Another cloud came while the sun still shone.

Two little clouds wondering what to do

A third one joined them in the sky so blue

Three little clouds were hatching a plan

When another flew in (his name was Sam)

Four little clouds trying to make some rain.

They had just gotten started when another cloud came.

Five little clouds loving the storm they brew

Better get inside because they’re raining on you!

Five Scruffy Beards

I STILL haven’t scanned the files I need to post the pea themed craft. Please. Forgive me. Until I do, might I tempt you with a flannel story about beards?

Five scruffy beards looking real tough.
One ran home because the others were too rough.

Four bushy beards hanging real low.
One was too short so the beard had to go.

Three regal beards thinking that they rule.
One got dethroned and sent back to school.

Two dangerous beards are proving their might
One cried uncle and gave up the fight

One cool beard showing off its style.
It got shaved off to make way for a smile.

Edit: OH YEAH I forgot to give a link with possible related books! Now, I don’t exactly have many books SPECIFICALLY with beards, but maybe it would go with some of the more villainous stories I have in my Big Bad Wolf and Behavior tags. Hmm. That Big Bad Wolf one should have way more than that, I’ll do some digging. More specifically I’d suggest reading the Backbeard books because they are hilarious.

I'm pretty sure the purple thing is a bird.

Five Comfy Mattresses (Princess and the Pea)

Heeeey! I had planned on posting this one NEXT week. But some stuff I need scanned for this week’s previously planned pea themed craft has not been scanned, and you can’t really print out PDFs using your imagination, right?

Edit: Here is the pea themed craft! Or at least there WILL be the pea themed craft after 2/22/13.

5 Comfy Mattresses Under a Sleeping Princess
But the top one was too pinchy and she found a…crab!

4 Comfy Mattresses Under a Sleeping Princess
But the top one was too squishy and she found a….banana!

3 Comfy Mattresses Under a Sleeping Princess
But the top one was too hot and she found a….sun!

2 Comfy Mattresses Under a Sleeping Princess
But the top one was too buzzy and she found a…bee!

1 Comfy Mattress Under a Sleeping Princess
But it was TOO lumpy and she found a…pea!

So she ate the pea and fell asleep.

I actually got a lot of help from Nicole on this one. She helped me figure out what should be in the bed AND did the Puffy Paint detailing, because as far as I’m concerned Puffy Paint is THE DEVIL. Also yes I KNOW that it DOESN’T RHYME this caused me no end of angst. If I figure out how to rhyme it later I’ll update.

So how great is kid logic? I’ve done this twice so far, and both times when I ask them “What do you think would make her too hot?” a kid would immediately shout “THE SUN!”. At which point I said “Haha what? You’re crazy why would a sun be under the- OH MAN YOU WERE RIGHT!”

Need appropriately themed books? Check out my food, peas,  and princess tags on Shelfari! And if you have any recommendations I’d love to hear them!

You know. I could have SWORN I saw this “princess” before. I have suspicions she may actually be a fugitive.
